GUITAR

Here’s the guitar I built under the guidance of Lee Mulverhill and David Nichols, a living legend and master luthier in Malone, NY. Dave builds high-end custom guitars for Martin Guitars, and does most of their complex and intricate pearl inlay. I built it from scratch, I even cut out the pearl in the headstock and fretboard and inlaid them into the ebony. What a process that is! I cut out the designs from a single piece of pearl, by hand, with a jewelers saw...with a blade that is tiny and delicate. I broke a bunch. I even did small details, such as scalloping and shaping the top braces...which you could only see if you had a mirror and a very flexible neck. It lightens the guitar and gives it a better sound. I cut the frets and set them in the fretboard, shaped them, and treated the fretboard with lemon oil. Everything. Lots of sanding and some coats of lacquer later, I have my own “pro” model guitar. OK, “amateur” model...
